Torri Webster Talks Planning For Your Future
Inspiration Social media influencer, digital content creator, and recent university graduate, Torri Webster shares her secrets on planning for post-secondary.
Mediaplanet: What advice do you have for aspiring university students?
Torri Webster: Ask yourself simple questions — what are you passionate about and would like to be an advocate for? What is your end goal? Who do you want to be by the time you graduate? It’s important to be sure that you have answers to some of these questions before picking a program to ensure you get the most out of your university career.
MP: What tips would you give first-year university students?
TW: Get involved! Get yourself out there and be known for something good — the valuable friendships and strong relationships you build with your professors can be what makes your university experience that much more amazing! Also, try to find a balance between school life and your social life. University can be overwhelming, so it’s important you always make time for your loved ones and, most importantly, yourself.
MP: What is the most important thing to consider when it comes to making a decision about your program?
TW: When it came to deciding which program was best for me, I learned that going where the industry is going was my best bet! Work towards the professional future and not the past. With the global economy constantly changing it’s important to stay informed and to base your academic decision on these changes.
MP: What steps did you take in making your decision of where to go and what program to take?
TW: I met with a specialist and a counsellor to get some outside help with understanding which programs existed. Your career path will constantly change, so it’s good to do your research. I also did a personality test that presented me with several options for programs and universities across Canada. This really helped me uncover my interests and what career paths were out there!
